Why it's critical to have your patients diagnosed by a doctor

It is easy for dietitians to make the assumption that a condition is Irritable Bowel Syndrome or something else. This is very dangerous as there are often other conditions that have similar symptoms, which can be much more dangerous if not appropriately diagnosed.

It’s best to work with a doctor to get the diagnoses established as quickly as possible, so you and the doctor can work together to make the right decisions.

Dietitians and doctors referral

Symptoms that are red flags and should prompt a referral to a doctor are:

  1. Unexplained weight loss

  2. Bleeding or anemia

  3. Persistent vomiting or changes in bowels.

Remember it is best to err on the side of caution. Once diagnosed it is time for doctors and dietitians to work together to make the next best decision on how to treat the patient.
